What began as a simple dream in a church hall has evolved into Victoria's leading youth performing arts and athletic development organisation, while never losing sight of our core mission: developing the whole person through the transformative power of movement and performance.
Our Story
Lynda Mathis
A LEGACY OF EXCELLENCE
The beginning – 1960
In 1960, Lynda Mathis established Mathis School of Dancing with just six students in a small church in Parkdale. Her philosophy was beautifully simple yet profoundly impactful: to pass on to students her love and passion for dance while fostering an appreciation for the many styles of dance and theatre performance.
Evolution and growth
65 years later, what began as one woman's passion has evolved into one of Melbourne's leading dance, cheerleading and arts education organisations, now based in state-of-the-art facilities in Dingley Village. Under the continuing guidance of Lynda's daughter, Jen Barfoot, and granddaughter, Bridget Barfoot, we've expanded our mission while staying true to our foundational values.
Looking forward
In 2025, we're evolving to become Unity Brands Collective, creating a unified community that allows us to provide specialised excellence across dance and cheerleading while staying true to the the family atmosphere and personalised attention that has defined our approach from the very beginning.
